How do you keep a group together on a road trip?

Keep everyone on one shared live map and one chat channel so each car sees the others in real time, agree on regroup points before you leave, and assign a lead car and a sweep car at the back. Group-driving apps like Vamio do this in one place — the whole group joins a single drive, sees every car move live, and can send quick messages or a one-tap SOS without phone calls. On the free plan a drive holds up to 20 people on one map; for a bigger caravan, split into multiple drives. The essentials: a shared map, agreed stops, a lead and a sweep, and a fast way to alert the group if someone falls behind.

Is there a Life360 alternative for road trips?

Yes — for road trips, group-driving apps fit better than family-safety trackers. Life360 is built for always-on family location; on a road trip you usually want sharing only while you are actually driving together, then off. Apps like Vamio take that approach: location is shared only during an active drive and stops when it ends, with no background tracking and no data sale. They also add trip features family trackers lack — a shared live map for the whole group, in-drive chat, and one-tap SOS. Vamio is free for up to 20 people per drive on iOS 16+ and Android 10+. If you want continuous all-day family location instead, a dedicated family-safety app may still suit you better.

What is the easiest way for a group to share locations while driving together?

Put everyone on one shared live map for the trip instead of texting locations back and forth. The whole group joins a single drive, each car appears and moves in real time, and you send quick messages without leaving the map. Apps like Vamio work this way — you join by link with no sign-up, location is shared only during the active drive and stops automatically when it ends, and a one-tap SOS alerts everyone with your exact location if you break down. A typical hour-long drive uses only about 5–10 MB of data, and the free plan covers up to 20 people per drive.

Is Vamio really free?

Yes. The free plan includes all core coordination features — real-time tracking, group chat, SOS, and invites — at $0. Up to 20 people per drive on the free plan. A Pro plan is coming with higher limits and premium features for power users.

How does Vamio use my location?

Vamio only accesses your location during active drives — when you explicitly start or join one. The moment the drive ends, location sharing stops. We never track you in the background. We never sell location data. Period. Read our location data policy for full transparency.

Can other people see my location when I'm not in a drive?

No. Location sharing is strictly limited to active drives. Outside of a drive, no one — not even Vamio — can see where you are. You're invisible until you choose not to be.

How does the app work?

Three steps: (1) Create a drive, (2) Share the invite link with your group, (3) Drive. Everyone shows up on a live map in real time. The whole group stays coordinated without a single phone call. See all features.

What devices does Vamio support?

Vamio is available on iOS (iPhone) and Android. You need iOS 16+ or Android 10+ for the best experience. Both platforms get the same features — no platform gets treated as second-class.

How much data does Vamio use?

Very little. Location updates are lightweight — a typical hour-long drive uses roughly 5–10 MB of data. Less than streaming one song. You'll barely notice it on your data plan.

What is the SOS feature?

SOS is a one-tap emergency alert. If you break down, get in an accident, or need help, hit the SOS button and every driver in your group instantly receives a notification with your exact GPS location. It's not a replacement for 911, but it gets your crew to you fast. Learn more about safety.

Do I need an account to join a drive?

Joining a drive is instant — tap the invite link and you're on the map. If you want to create your own drives, you'll need a quick account (Apple or Google sign-in, nothing else). We only ask for what we need.

Is my data safe?

Yes. All data is encrypted in transit and at rest. We use Firebase infrastructure with enterprise-grade security. We don't sell your data. We don't share it with advertisers. Read our full privacy policy and safety page.

Can I delete my account?

Absolutely. You can delete your account at any time from within the app (Settings > Account > Delete Account). All your personal data is removed. It's your data — you control it. Account deletion details.

Does Vamio work without cell service?

Vamio needs an internet connection (cellular or Wi-Fi) to share locations in real time. In areas with spotty coverage, the app will show the last known position of each driver and update as soon as connectivity returns.

How many people can join a single drive?

Each drive supports up to 20 people on one live map on the free plan. For bigger events, split into multiple drives. We plan to offer paid tiers later with higher per-drive limits.
